What's the difference between a CRM and a sales dashboard?

What a CRM does
- Stores and organizes all customer and deal information
- Tracks interactions and history
- Moves deals through a sales process
- Requires data entry from your team
- Pulls reports from its own data
What a dashboard does
- Displays metrics and summaries visually
- Pulls data from multiple sources (CRM, spreadsheet, accounting software)
- Shows real-time or near-real-time information
- Typically read-only (no data entry)
- Requires manual data feeding or API connections
Which comes first
You need a CRM if:
- You're tracking customer relationships or sales cycles
- Multiple people need to access the same customer history
- You want a record of what happened with each prospect
A dashboard alone works if:
- You already have clean data elsewhere (spreadsheet, accounting software)
- You just need to see high-level metrics weekly
- Your team is small and coordinates verbally
The typical path
Most teams implement a CRM first, then add a dashboard layer on top for executive visibility. Very few teams use a dashboard without an underlying CRM—the data gets stale too quickly.
